I have just added a picture sent in by Graham Thompson to his contribution to a previous diary entry on Inchanga Memories. The picture is of the pupils at Inchanga Prep, including himself, in 1941.
Today we have a magnificent set of views (mostly of the harbour) sent in by Johnny Vassilaros.  Thanks to J Dube (see comments below) I now know that these pictures originated from from HiltonT”s photo sharing pages on Flickr and are courtesy of The Publicity and Travel Department of The SAR&H. Included are shots of the loading and unloading of cargo in the pre-container days, tugs and ships, aerial harbour views and some beach scenes. Most have captions and some even have dates.
[nggallery id=7]When taking a look at HiltonT’s Flickr pictures I also came across this beautiful shot of buses having just been unloaded from the ship in 1939. The picture originally appeared in Life magazine and was taken by William Vandivert and shows the buses complete with Durban roller-destination signs. My informant Derek Austin sent the following picture of the Alexandra Hotel and Smuggler’s Inn. It is not credited but I would be most happy to correct that if anyone knows whose the picture is.

My informant Douglas Beveridge has sent in a picture of an aircraft (believed to be a Kittyhawk fighter**) being recovered from Umhlanga Beach in 1942. Does anyone know anything about the crash?

I was looking at the statistics of this diary (which is really a blog) built-into the FAD website and I realised that we have started to develop quite a community of people leaving comments on posts and sharing their knowledge and memories. This picture is of the site of the old station and the workshop complex. Bob had the following to say about it:
The closest date I can guess is 1981/2. The new station was already in use. The old station platform canopy had already been moved sideways so that Pine Street could run right through. The building which became The Workshop had hardly been touched. Can anybody remember the date on which the new station in Umgeni Road opened as that would give an accurate starting period?
A label on the back of the picture says ‘Patrick Squire Photographer’.

Regular contributor John Taylor forwarded on these two pictures that have apparently been circulating for a bit. The idea of digging out a second harbour for Durban (or extending the existing one) has been around for quite a long time.
I believe that Field Marshall Smuts may have been among those to mention it in the early days but I can’t be sure of that fact. Anyhow, the old Louis Botha (Durban International) airport site seems to be an ideal candidate for a new harbour and these pictures show the site now and what it might look like in the future.
I must confess I always assumed that a project along these lines would link up with the existing harbour. Â It looks as if ships will have to be manually turned around before they can leave instead of using the present harbour mouth as an exit.
I wonder how long it will be be before work starts on what will clearly be a huge and expensive project? I personally wouldn’t be surprised if it never happens and they go with establishing an inland port instead.
