Hello Allan, I’m sure many old Durbanites will remember Cherry Wainer and Don Storer, who played organ and drums respectively regularly at one of the big cocktail places (I don’t remember which one) on the Durban Beachfront in the late 1950s/early 1960s. I have just read the obituary for Cherry in The Telegraph (UK) – she passed away in November.
There are a number of videos of Cherry performing on YouTube where I found a comments by a user known as Steinwaygrande who wrote:
Share this:Cherry Wainer was born in South Africa which is correct but did not go to the UK permanently, she started her career in the Playhouse Theatre in Durban . I used to go with my parents when I was about 12 or thereabouts and see her performing on Saturday nights as my Father used to get seats to have a meal that was out of this world. Come interval we would go onto the balcony and watch until the bells rang and back inside to see the main movie.
