Caption: Postcard showing the Swan boat at Blue Lagoon. As children we knew it as the 'Duck Boat' and it was a favourite, rivalled only by the delights contained in the building at the extreme right of the picture, the famous Sunkist restaurant. Date unknown.

picture must date from the late 1980s, or even later,
because it shows the Elangeni & Maharani hotels
having become Holiday Inns.

Caption: A postcard showing a view of the beachfront.
The quality is quite poor but it does show the location
of the various buildings on the seashore, many of which
are gone now. On the right, we have Newtons Amusement
Arcade, there's a triangular patch of grass, a parking
lot and the Nest and the Cuban Hat, a building which
is still there, Rachel Finlayson Pool and Kensington
Amusement Arcade.
It looks to me as if the Kensington is on the site presently
occupied by the Ocean Conference Centre, but for not
much longer.

Malibu Hotel which she recalls as having been there
1n 1971.

A verse I remember which was often quoted by James,
a popular waiter at the Los Angeles Hotel, went: "Vai
[go to the] Killarney, smoke zarney [cannabis], scheme
[think] you're lekker larney [nice and important]. Date

of the days when the annual funfair used to be held
on the beachfront and the Lower Marine Parade was still
open to cars. Date unknown but the fact that the funfair
was in town means it was probably in the July School
Holidays.
